2025 road safety statistics confirm a fall in deaths on EU roads

19,350 people died in road crashes in the EU in 2025, 3% fewer than in 2024 and 15% fewer than in 2019. Romania (68 deaths per million) is among the three highest rates, with Bulgaria (71) and Croatia (65).

The European Commission today published the final road death figures for 2025, reporting 19,350 deaths from road crashes. This is a 3% decrease compared with 2024 and 15% compared with 2019, meaning 580 fewer deaths on European roads than in 2024 and 3,400 fewer than in 2019. The results (deaths per million inhabitants) confirm that Sweden (19 per million) and Denmark (24 per million) have the safest roads in the EU. Despite progress since 2019, Bulgaria (71 per million) and Romania (68 per million), together with Croatia (65 per million), continue to report the highest road fatality rates in the EU. Provisional data for 2026 shows a positive trend: more countries reported a reduction in deaths of over 5% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025 than reported increases in road deaths. The Commission will continue to monitor these trends closely and to support Member States in addressing emerging concerns. Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said: "Road safety is about more than rules and regulations. It means protecting human lives and preventing tragedies that affect families and communities across Europe. In the European Union, every life lost on our roads is one too many. Our goal is clear: to make sure every citizen, wherever they travel and whatever mode of transport they use, can reach their destination. That means making our roads safer, strengthening prevention and making sure every journey ends safely." The 2026 edition of the EU Road Safety Conference will take place on 23 November in Brussels, marking the midpoint of Europe's 10-year strategy to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The winners of the 2026 Road Safety Excellence Awards, celebrating the most inspired and impactful road safety initiatives on the continent, will be announced at the event.
