Mureșan on becoming PM, and on early elections

Speaking to press in Strasbourg, Mureșan — put forward by PNL, USR and UDMR as a candidate for PM — says he won't speculate on the president's decision, and that early elections could become a necessity if Romania's political deadlock isn't resolved.

You're asking me whether I'll get the chance to form a majority in Parliament, and whether I have a chance of gathering 233 votes? I think that if the president designates me, I'll have that chance — I won't comment on the president's intentions. It's the president's prerogative to make a nomination and explain how he arrived at it. We've all been waiting a long time for a nomination. I think it's time for Romania's president to hold official, formal consultations with the parties represented in Parliament and make a nomination — the sooner, the better. Early elections aren't a desirable scenario, but for any responsible politician, if the deadlock continues, they become an option. We, the National Liberal Party, don't want early elections — that's not what we want — but if the deadlock isn't overcome, it could become a necessity. It will always be far more suspicious to have a politician who's afraid to go back to the citizens, a politician who resists early elections with all his strength, than a politician who says: if the deadlock can't be overcome, let's give people the chance to vote. I'm convinced that people don't want Romania to stand still, or to go backwards, as PSD and AUR propose. We saw it in the presidential election: most people want a reformed, modern, pro-European state — that's how they voted, including in the last presidential election. I'll say it again: we don't want early elections — they'd mean a few months of uncertainty — but perhaps two months of an election campaign is better than two and a half years at the mercy of a PSD-AUR majority. If they do become inevitable, then the National Liberal Party will get ready, we'll try to convince people, and we'll go to elections.
