Commission and IMF back investing in people

Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu met IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington to discuss preparing workers for AI-driven changes to the labour market — more dynamic skills systems, faster transitions between jobs, and closer data cooperation between the two institutions.

European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu met today, 24 September, in Washington, with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. The talks focused on preparing people for the changes artificial intelligence is bringing to the labour market, starting from a shared vision: people must be at the centre of both institutions' initiatives. The meeting stressed the need for more dynamic education and skills-development systems, able to keep pace with technological change. People need to be able to acquire the skills they will need ahead of time, as jobs are transformed. Another topic was anticipating labour-market shifts, so that workers can move quickly from one job to another, with the training they need and without periods of unemployment. During the discussions, they agreed to strengthen cooperation, in particular by cross-referencing the two organisations' key data and information, to support early, well-targeted action regardless of how things develop. The meeting took place during Roxana Mînzatu's trip to the United States, from 20-24 September, to New York, Boston and Washington, dedicated to education, skills and the future of work in the age of artificial intelligence. The agenda included events held alongside the UN General Assembly, meetings with UN and World Bank representatives, visits to MIT and Harvard University, and discussions with representatives of the US administration and major tech companies.
