26th European Day of Languages promotes linguistic diversity and inclusion
Tomorrow, 26 September, marks the European Day of Languages, with language institutes, universities and schools across the EU marking Europe's multilingual heritage under this year's theme, 'Languages unite us.'
The European Day of Languages, a joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe launched in 2001, is marked every year on 26 September. Language institutes, cultural associations, universities, language professionals and schools take part in events across the EU to celebrate Europe's rich and diverse multilingual heritage.
This year's theme, 'Languages unite us,' highlights the importance and benefits of language learning and the need to protect linguistic diversity for the sake of inclusion, democracy and social cohesion.
Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs and Preparedness Roxana Mînzatu said: 'Language skills are essential for access to the labour market, mobility and active citizenship. Knowing several languages can help citizens understand diverse perspectives, question disinformation and participate more in democratic life. Through Erasmus+, Creative Europe and the Union of Skills, we continue to strengthen skills development, including literacy, as well as foreign language learning.'
The European Commission will host a virtual event and exhibition on 30 September, including a roundtable titled 'Languages unite us -- how languages shape inclusion,' open to anyone who wishes to register.
