Commission launches the first matching round of the biomethane mechanism
The first round of the voluntary, free biomethane mechanism opens: buyers can submit requests until 23 December 2026, then suppliers indicate interest. A new regulatory dashboard compares national biomethane rules across EU countries.
The European Commission today opens the first matching round of the biomethane mechanism, a voluntary and free initiative under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform.
Launched in June this year, the mechanism is designed to connect businesses, investors and other stakeholders to step up biomethane production, trade and investment across Europe and to help meet the EU's energy ambitions for 2030 and beyond.
In this first matching round, buyers can submit their requests until 23 December 2026. Suppliers will then indicate their interest in meeting those requests and, if a match is found, participants receive each other's details and can continue commercial discussions outside the mechanism.
The Commission has also introduced a new regulatory dashboard to help market participants understand and compare national biomethane rules across EU countries, ultimately supporting cross-border business opportunities and a more integrated EU biomethane market.
This first step under the biomethane mechanism comes at a crucial time, as the EU aims to strengthen its energy security and reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels amid geopolitical instability and pressure on energy markets. Biomethane is a sustainable, low-carbon, domestically produced energy source that can be stored and can contribute to the EU's security of supply, decarbonisation and competitiveness objectives.
The biomethane mechanism builds on the success of other mechanisms under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform, including the hydrogen mechanism, which addresses major barriers to developing the hydrogen market, and the raw materials mechanism, which supports strategic projects and strengthens the resilience of supply chains.
